How To Do The Linked Double Crochet Stitch

Are you looking for a new stitch to try? Or are you a beginner in crochet searching for a new but simple stitch pattern? Have a look at linked double crochet stitch (ldc - US crochet terms).

This is quite simple stitch - modification of the classic double crochet stitch. It creates solid texture with no holes so it is perfect for different crochet projects, winter garments or simply those patterns where you want a different look or a crochet work with no holes.

Note: As the stitches are 'linked' the final work is not as elastic as the normal double crochet stitch project, so have it in mind when measuring your work.

A row of linked double crochet stitches looks different on the both sides.

A row of LDC from the right side of the work:

And this is how it is looks like on the wrong side of the work:

If you turn the work at the end of each row the final look will be like this:

Repeating pattern every two rows.

Here is a photo tutorial how to make LDC

Start with a chain (the number of chains is not important, add 3 more for the starting chain on the next row). Then insert the hook in the second chain from the hook and pull a loop.

Insert the hook in the next chain and draw a loop through (3 loops on the chain). Now finish like you normally would finish a double crochet - yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the rest 2 loops.

Your work will now look like the one below:

Ok, this is the most important part to make a linked double crochet st. Look at the marked loop. Insert the hook there and draw a loop through (2 loops on the hook). See the picture below.

Insert the hook in the next chain and draw a loop through (3 loops on the hook) and finish off like a normal dc st - yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over and pull through the rest 2 loops.

This is the second ldc.

Now continue the same way. Insert the hook in the selected loop and draw a loop (2 loops on the hook). Then insert the hook in the next chain and draw a second loop (total of 3 loops on the hook).

Finish like you would finish a dc st.

This is 3 ldc made.

Continue till the end of the row. If you work in rounds all rounds will look the same on the right side. However if you work in rows and turn at the end of each row your work will look different every two rows.

Here is how the second row will look like.

If you want to keep the look of the work the same each row then you have to do a filler row - a row of single crochet or ss row.

Row with ldc and a row with ss - right side

And the wrong side.
