The Bear Hat

Simple but very stylish bear hat for a little lady. The pattern uses only basic stitches so it is beginners friendly. The pattern is designed for toddler 2-6 years old (depends on the yarn used and how stretchy it is) but is easily adapted to any size - just check the notes in the pattern.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: Worsted weight yarn
Hook size: 6mm/J/10 (hook size conversion chart)

Stitches used: dc, sc, mc

Finished size: To fit toddler 2-5 years old. See the notes in the pattern if you want bigger hat (6+ and adult).
Colours: white brown, dark brown, white, black

Abbreviations:
mc - magic circle
sc - single crochet
dc - double crochet
sc2tog - 2 sc together (sc decrease)

Pattern:

Hat:
Round 1: In mc dc 10, ss in first dc (10 st).

Round 2: Ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st, end with ss in ch 2 (20 st).

Round 3: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat * - *, end with ss in ch 2 (30 st)

Round 4: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat * - *, end with ss in ch 2 (40 st).

Round 5: Ch 2, dc in same st, *dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat * - *, end with ss in ch 2 (50 st).

For size 2-5 years go to round 7. For size 6+ continue with round 6.

Round 6: Ch 2, dc in same st,  *dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next st*, repeat * - *, end with ss in ch 2 (60 st).

If you want adult hat continue with the increase rounds - increase 10 st each round evenly spread. One more increase round for the next size  10+ or two more increase round for adult.

Round 7 - 13: Ch2, dc in same st, dc in each st around, end with ss.

Round 14: Ch 1, sc in same st, * sc in next 3 st, long sc in the st from previous row*, repeat * - * till end.

Eyes: With black - in mc dc 10, ss in first dc (make two)

Nose: With black - ch 5, sc in second st from hook, sc in each st back. Turn. Sc2tog, sc2tog. Cut the yarn and weave in ends. 

With white in mc dc 10. Ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in each st (20 st). Ch 2, dc in same st, * dc in next st, 2 dc in next st *, repeat * - *, end with ss in ch 2 (30 st). Sew the nose and sew a mouth.

Ears: 
With white brown - in mc dc 10, end with ss. Join dark brown - ch 2, dc in same st, 2 dc in next 6 st (14 dc). Make 2 ears. 

Now make 2 more ears in dark brown only. Sew together ear with dark brown with ear with white brown. Sew them on the hat.
