Simply Charming Headband

Not having enough time for all the gifts you want to make?

Try this pattern - headbands are faster to make than hats, can be made in different sizes and width, different yarn type - to either keep warm or simply to keep the hair away. Choose different colors or simply add flower or other embelishment to make them look exceptional.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: DK (11 wpi) , I used Drops Cotton Merino

Hook size: 4 mm/ G (hook size conversion chart)

Stitches used: ss, sc, dc, ch

Finished size: Lenght 20.5in/52 cm, width 4in/10 cm. Check the notes in the pattern how to decrease/increase the starting chain to make for kids

Abbreviations:

ss - slip stitch

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

ch - chain

* - * Repeat the pattern between the * as described

Notes:

- The black and the colored part are done separately, you will need stitch marker or anything to stop unraveling one part while you are working on the other

- Cluster is 3 dc in the same st, ch2 in the start of the colored row counts as dc

Pattern:

Adult size

Round 1: With black ch 90 (or any multiple of 3), join with ss in the first chain. Be careful to not twist the chain. Ch 1, sc in same st, sc around end with ss in first ch.

If you are having problems with the starting chain you may do this trick:
- Ch 91, do not join but sc in second hook from st, sc till the end, now join with ss in the opposite sc. It is easier to not twist the starting chain but you will have to sew a little at the end in the starting chain.
Or
- You may start with sc foundation chain

Round 2:
Ch 4, dc in same st. Skip 2st, * [dc, ch, dc] in the same st, skip 2 st*. Repeat * - * around, end with ss in the top of the starting chain. Put a marker in the last worked st and remove the hook.

Round 3: [Coloured round] Join new colour (red/yellow/green or whatever you want) in the ch space between the last two dc from the previous round. Ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in the same st, * work 3dc (cluster) in the next chain space*, repeat * - * till the end. SS in the top of the ch 3 from the start of the round. Put the stitch marker here and remove the hook. Continue the next row with black yarn. Round 4: [Black round]: With the hook draw the black loop (from the last worked black stitch where the marker was) so it is between two clusters of 3 dc from the coloured row and ch 4, dc in the same st. Skip the next coloured cluster from the previous row, * [dc, ch, dc] between the clusters of 3 dc from the previous row, skip the next cluster *. Repeat * - * till the end of the round, end with ss in the starting chain. Work only in the black stitches from the previous black round. Get the marker from the last worked stitch of the coloured row and put it here. Continue next row with the coloured yarn.

Round 5: [Coloured round]: With the hook draw the colored loop from the last worked coloured round so it is in the space between 2 dc of the black round. Insert the hook in the colored yarn and continue this row with coloured yarn. Ch 3, 2 dc in the same space. *Skip to the next chain space and work 3 dc*, repeat * - * till the end of the round, ss in the top of the ch 3 from the start of the row. Put the stitch marker here and continue working with black.

Round 6, 8, 10, 12, 14: Repeat round 4

Round 7, 9, 11, 13: Repeat round 5

If you need to increase the widtth continue with few more repeats of round 4 and 5.

Round 15: Continue with black. Ch 1, sc in the same st, now work 1 sc in each st, 2 sc in the ch space between the dc. You should end up with the same number of stitches like in the starting chain.

Round 16: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc around. End with ss in starting chain.

Marianna's Flower

This flower is specially designed to match this hat.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: Not important for this project. The flower on the picture is made with DK yarn (very soft mix of bamboo, wool, acrillyc)
Hook size: Use the hook recommended for the yarn you are using

Stitches used: sc, hdc, dc, ss, ch, mc

Finished size: 3.5in (9cm) with DK yarn and 4mm hook

Abbreviations: This pattern uses US crochet terms, their matching UK terms can be found here

sc - single crochet
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
ss - slip stitch
ch - chain
mc - magic circle

Pattern:

In MC ch 3 (count as first dc), work 11 more dc, end with ss in top of ch 3.

Next round is worked in front loops only. * Ch 4, ss in the next st *, repeat 11 more times. End with ss in the front loop of the first st.

This round is worked in back loops only. * Ch 8, ss in the next st *, repeat 11 more times. End with ss in the back loop of the first st. You should have 12 chains of 8.

Now work only in the ch8 spaces. Ss in the first ch 8 space. Work sc, hdc, 18 dc, hdc, sc in the chain 8 space. End with ss in the next chain. Repeat 11 more times for each of the next ch spaces.

That's all.

You may sew a button in the center.

How to crochet simple cord

Have you ever wondered how to create crocheted cord or a rug with some fine yarn you have?
If you do then this tutorial is just for you.

Many projects and especially amigurumi projects may require from you to make a thin crocheted cord - some bugs body or antennas, plant stalk or different accessories like bracelets and necklaces, bag handles.
Sometimes you want to crochet a rug but you can't find any suitable yarn with that thickness.
Once you learn how to crochet cords you can simply use any yarn you want to create first a cord of it and then crochet a rug.

You may use any yarn and hook, just make sure to do a bigger starting chain than needed.

Pattern:

Chain any number of stitches - if you plan to create a rug from crocheted cord simply go with the whole ball of yarn. While making chains make a ball with the chained cord.

Once you are done with the ball now go back.

Ch 1 and ss in the next stitch, continue ss in next st till end. Turn.

Ch 1, now insert the hook in the starting loop and the lower loop of the st made in the last row and yo, pull through both loops, continue the same way till the end.

That is all - now you may use the cord made for necklaces, bracelets, amigurumi projects or instead of t-shirt yarn for rugs.

Crocheting with the cord - you may easily do any rug, or any small project.

Linked Textured Headband

I'm so in love with the structure created by the linked double crochet stitches - it is unusual, stylish and the most important - there is no holes like with the standard double crochet stitches. It is as fast to crochet as with the double crochet stitch and very easy to learn.

This headband is a combination of row with ldc and ss and is made in rows, at the very end I've made two button holes on one side and sewed buttons on the other side.

I like how the wrong side of the crochet work looks like - it is unusual and much more different from any other stitch combination.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: Worst weight yarn
Hook size: 6 mm/ J (hook size conversion chart)

Stitches used: ldc, ss, sc

Finished size: To fit adult's head, can be adapted to any size

Abbreviations:

ss - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
ldc - linked double crochet
yo - yarn over

Pattern:

Row 1: Ch 75 (or the appropriate number of stitches to fit the size you need), sc in second st from hook, sc till end, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second ch, yo and pull a loop through (2 loops on the hook). Insert the hook in the next st, yo and pull a loop (3 loops on the hook). Now finish like a normal double crochet - yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through the rest 2 loops.
Continue with ldc st till the end of the row. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, ss loosely in next st, ss till the end. If you can't crochet loosely just change the hook with a size up. Turn.

Repeat row 2 and 3 five more times.

Finish with a row of sc.

Make a row of sc across the width of the headband. Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Button holes:
Turn the headband on the opposite side and make a row of sc across the width, turn (14 st) . Now make button holes - ch 1, sc in same st, sc, ch 3, skip 3 st, sc in next 4 st, ch 3, sk 3 st, sc in last two st, turn. Ch 1, sc, sc, 3 sc in the ch space, sc in next 4 st, 3 sc in chain space, sc in last two st.
Cut the yarn and weave in the ends.

Instead of buttons you may simply join both ends of the headband and put some embelishment or work the headband in rounds.

Diamond Headband

This headband uses only basic stitches - sc, ch and ss. It is perfect for beginners in crocheting. Can be used as scrap yarn buster project as it uses only small amount of yarn.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: 50% Acrylic, 50% Wool
Hook size: J/6mm (hook size conversion chart)

Stitches used: ss, sc and ch

Finished size: Toddler and Adult. The pattern can be adapted to fit different sizes
Colors used: color A (base color), color B and color C (the row in the middle)
Different colors may be combined
Yarn needed: 45-50 yds(40-45m), 18-20gr
Gauge: 13x17 sc = 4x4in / 10x10cm

Notes: The pattern is worked in rounds. Each round ends with ss. Always start with ss and ch 1 in same stitch.

Abbreviations used:
ss - slip stitch
sc - single crochet
ch - chain

Pattern:

Ch 66 (for adult size) or 60 (for toddler) , ss in first chain to form a circle Make sure the chain is not twisted. Now work in rounds.

Round 1:
Ch1, sc in same st, sc around, ss in ch1. Join color B.

Before continuing further check the size of the headband. If needed unwind and add/remove stitches from starting chain to fit better.

Round 2:
Ch 1, sc in same st, ch 1,* skip one st, sc, ch1*, repeat * - * till end, ss in ch1

Round 3:
Join color A in ch1 space between two sc, ch1, sc in same st,* skip one st, sc, ch 1*, repeat * -*, ss in ch1

Round 4:
Ch1, sc in same st, sc around, ss in ch1

Round 5:
Join color C, repeat row 2

Round 6:
Join color A, repeat row 3

Round 7:
Repeat row 4

Round 8:
Join color B, repeat row 2

Round 9:
Join color A, repeat row 3

Round 10:
Repeat row 4

That's all. Cut the yarn and weave in ends.

You may add similar bracelet to finish up the look :)

Eyelash hair elastic

So I got some eyelash yarn and I wondered what to do with it - I wanted some small project just to test it first. So I got some of my daughters hair elastics, crochet around and here is the result (see the pattern details below).

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: Eyelash yarn of your choice
Hook size: Hook one size bigger than suggested for the yarn. I used hook size 4mm

Stitches used: sc and ch

Pattern:

Make a knot around the hair elastic.

Ch 1, sc in the center of the elastic.

Repeat the following pattern * ch 2, sc in the center * till the elastic is fully covered.

End with ss in the first st. The chains 2 between scs will allow the elastic to stretch as usual and will make the elastic even more fuzzy.

ZigZag Headband

If you liked the bracelet pattern then you may also want to make a matching headband. The pattern is pretty much the same, I just added two more rows for the headband and more stitches to fit a regular adult head.

This pattern uses only combination of doubles so it is easy to make even for beginners in crocheting.

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: The yarn I used is 75% cotton, 25% viscose, but any yarn will do
Hook size: 3mm (hook size conversion chart), any other hook will also work well, it will just make the headband bigger (if you use bigger hook) or smaller(if you use smaller hook). You will need to adjust the lenght.

Stitches used: ch and dc

Finished size: 1.5in/3.2 cm wide, 21 in/54cm long - can be done longer or smaller to fit any head
Gauge: 4 in/10 cm = 20 st. from pattern

Colors: I used different combination of two colors (color A and color B in the pattern)

Pattern:
Row 1
With color A ch 110 st (or even number st), dc in 4th ch from hook,* skip 1 st, 2dc in next st*, repeat from * to * till end, turn. You may join the end with the start of the chain (make sure it is not twisted) and work in rounds. I joined the ends of the headband with 2 buttons so it is easily adjustable.

Row 2:
Change to color B - ch 3, dc between the two dc (not in the loops but in the space between the two dc from the previous row, see the picture below), *skip 1st, work 2dc between the next two dc (in the dc space)*, repeat from * to * till the end, turn

Row 3:
Change to color A and repeat row 2.

Row 4:
Back to color B and repeat row 2.

Row 5:
Switch to color A and repeat row 2.

Adding a button:
Before cutting the yarn go around the short edge with a row of sc (I made 10 sc - 2 sc in each dc), cut the yarn. Then attach the yarn at the oposite edge of the headband, make a row of sc, turn. I made two ch 6 as buttons holes.

Mens Headband

There are plenty of headbands for women, girls and babies but there are almost none for men. And they also need them in the cold weather. So I designed this simple crochet headband with this in mind and I'm quite happy with the result. It actually turned out quite nice to wear but I couldn't catch my model to photo ;-)

Anyway here is the pattern...

Square Textured Headband

Another very easy and fast to crochet headband with square texture.

I like making easy headbands with texture. However sometimes the yarn is too stretchy, sometimes it is not stretchy at all, or the person you are making the headband for is not there or it is just a gift.

This is why I normally put buttons or ribbing. This way you know the headband will fit so you can make some of them for gifts :)

The headband pattern I'm posting is simple, yet has nice texture and 2 big buttons. I also used chunky yarn, so the whole headband is worked up very fast.

The yarn used is Eskimo from Garn Studio with hook size 9mm (US M).

Yarn: Eskimo from Garn Studio
Hook size: 9 mm/M (hook size conversion chart)

Stitches used: sc, dc

Finished size: Adult

Special stitch - the special combination of stitches that makes this amazing texture is very simple - one sc, followed by two dc.

Gauge: The gauge is not so important here as you can always add more rows or more chains (if you want to make it wider). In my case 4 special st are 10.5cm/4 in wide.

Finished item is around 10.5cm/4in wide, 53cm/20.5in long

Pattern

Start with foundation chain ot sc - chain 13 st (or any row of a multiple of 3 chains + 1).

If you don't know how to do foundation chain you can check this tutorial here.

Or simply chain 12 + 2, sc in second ch from hook till the end

Row 1 - 5:

Ch1, sc in the same stitch, 1 sc in every st till the end, turn (13st)

This is the button part and it should be 3-4cm (1.5in) wide

Row 6:

Ch 2, 2 dc in same st, *skip 2, in next stitch make sc and 2 dc*

Repeat from * to the end of row ending with 1 sc in the last st. Turn.

Repeat Row 6 till desired lenght is reached (you will add 3-4 cm/1.5in more with the button hole part).

I made it around 50cm/20 in long.

Button hole part:

Row 1- 3: ch1, sc in the same st and in every st till the end (13 sc)

Row 4: ch1, sc in the same st, sc in next st, ch 2, skip 2sc, sc in next 5 st, ch2, 1 sc in last two st

Row 5: ch1, sc in the same st, sc in next st, 2 sc in ch2 sp, sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in ch2 sp, sc in last two st

Row 6: ch1, sc in the same st and in every st till the end (13 sc)

Sew up 2 buttons with suitable size, enjoy!

You can wear it with buttons up, or hide them behind the hair :)
