The Fish Hat

Little boys also need beautiful hats. Although I've made this hat specially for my boy, my daughter loves it so much that I'm now making a second one...

Yarn: 100% cotton, but every other yarn will do as well
Hook size: G/6 or 4mm (hook size conversion chart)
Stitches used: ss, ldc, hdc, dc, ch
Finished size: Toddler size (3-6 years)

Abbreviations:

ss - slip stitch
ldc ss - linked double crochet slip stitch (see below detailed explanation)
hdc - half double crochet
dc - double crochet
ch - chain
mc - magic circle

How to do the linked double crochet slip stitch:
When you work with ldc you can't use the traditional slip stitch to join rounds as there will be holes in the project. This is how to join the ldc with ss at the end of each round.

When you have to do only one more ldc - start as a normal ldc

Check for this loop (shown at the picture) and insert the hook there, draw a loop and pull it through the first loop. Then pull it through the next loop.

Now you have two loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops.

You will have now an almost finished stitch. Now do a normal ss at the top of the starting chain.

That's it. Almost invisible join :)

Pattern:
Round 1: In MC ch 3 (counts as first ldc), insert the hook in the second st from hook and pull a loop. Insert the hook in the mc and draw a loop, now finish off like normal dc. Make another 9 ldc, ss (10 ldc).

Round 2: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Continue all around with 2 ldc in each st (20 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 3: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Repeat *ldc in next st, 2 ldc in next st* around, end with linked dc ss (30 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 4: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Repeat *ldc in next st, ldc in next st, 2 ldc in next st* around, end with linked dc ss (40 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 5: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Repeat *ldc, ldc, ldc, 2 ldc in next st* around, end with linked dc ss (50 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 6: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Repeat *ldc in the next 4 st, 2 ldc in next st* around, end with linked dc ss (60 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 7: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Repeat *ldc in next 5 st, 2 ldc in next st* around, end with linked dc ss (70 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 8: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Repeat *ldc in next 6 st, 2 ldc in next st* around, end with linked dc ss (80 ldc). End with linked dc ss.

Round 9 -10: Ch 3, insert the hook in the second st from hook and draw a loop, now insert the hook in same st and draw a loop, finish off like normal dc. Work one ldc in each st, end with linked dc ss.

Row 11: Join dark blue(or any other color), ch1, hdc in same st, hdc around, ss in ch1

Row 12: Join white color, ch 1, hdc in same st, hdc in each st, ss in ch1

Join blue color again
Row 13 - 17: Repeat row 9

Row 18: Repeat row 12

Row 19: Repeat row 11

Row 20: Join blue color and make a row of hdc, ss, cut the yarn and weave in ends.

Big fish: The big fish is made of 2 tone of yellow - yellow and pistaccio.
ch 7, sc in second ch from hook, sc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, hdc, now on opposite side hdc, hdc, dc, dc, hdc, sc
Fish tail - ch 3, sc in second st from hook, sc, ss, ch 3, sc in second st from hook, sc, ss.
Now change color - join new color and make a row of ss all around.

Fin: ch 3, 2 dc in second ch from hook, cut the yarn and sew to the fish body.

Small fish:
ch4, sc in second chain from hook, dc, hdc, now work on opposite side, hdc, dc, sc.
Fish tail - ch 2, ss in second ch from hook, ss in next sc, ch2, ss in second ch from hook, ss back in the previous st.

Linked DC Coasters

This set of coasters is very simple yet different. They are made of linked double crochet stitches and there is a detailed photo tutorial how to do ss for linked double crochet stitch.

*** This pattern is free. You may sell the products you make from my patterns but not the pattern itself. If you sell items from this pattern please link back to this post. Do not copy and repost this pattern or any of the photos and claim them as your own. ***

This pattern uses US crochet terms.

Yarn: whatever you want, I would suggest using cotton if you do coasters or any kitchen crochet.
Hook size: suitable for the yarn you are using. I'm using here cotton yarn for hook size 3.5mm/D with G hook (hook size conversion chart)
Stitches used: ldc
Finished size: 4in/10cm

Pattern

Round 1:
Start with magic cicle and chain 2. Insert the hook in the second chain from hook and draw a loop.

Then insert the hook into the magic circle and pull a loop (3 loops on hook). Now finish off like a normal dc stitch - yo pull through 2 loops, yo pull through the rest 2 loops.

First ldc made. Now to make another ldc insert the hook in the horizontal loop from the last stitch and draw a loop (see the picture below).

Then insert the hook into the mc and draw another loop. Finish off like normal dc - yo, pull through 2 loops on the hook, yo, pull through the rest two loops.
Another ldc stitch made. Now make 6 more ldc (8 ldc + starting chain).

End this round with special ldc ss. A normal ss won't work here as it makes a nasty hole in the project. Instead insert the hook from the center of the circle up in that loop of the starting chain that is semi-horizontal.

Yo and draw through 2 loops. Yo again and draw through the rest two loops.

Now we are at the same height as the other stitches, ss in the starting ch 2 st to finish off the round (10 ldc)

Round 2:
Ch 2, ldc in same stitch (insert hook in second ch from hook and draw a loop, then into the same st and draw second loop, then finish like normal dc), work 2 ldc in each stitch, finish with ldc ss (20 ldc).

Round 3:
Ch 2, ldc in same stitch, repeat *ldc in next st, 2 ldc in next st* till the end of the round, finish with ldc ss (30 ldc).

Round 4:
Ch 2, ldc in same stitch, repeat *ldc, ldc, 2 ldc* till the end of the round, finish with ldc ss (40 ldc).

Round 5:
Ch 2, ldc in same stitch, repeat *ldc, ldc, ldc, 2 ldc* till the end of the round, finish with ldc ss (50 ldc).

You may add more rows following the same pattern or even continue to make a hat.
